Purposes and Benefits of Psychological Assessment:
The general purpose of psychological assessment is to improve understanding of an individual’s experiences and current functioning, identify underlying causes of current problems and/or clarify diagnosis in order to make specific recommendations for improving wellbeing and/or daily functioning. A comprehensive psychological evaluation may include assessment of various aspects of emotional experience, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, personality characteristics and/or interpersonal dynamics. Psychological assessments can help clarify problems in living and adjustment; emotional, cognitive and behavioral functioning; family and social relationships; and other aspects of psychological functioning. The evaluation includes a written report with recommendations for treatment, resources, and/or accommodations. We also provide verbal feedback about the results so you have the opportunity to ask questions.
What to Expect:
All child assessments and adult autism spectrum disorder assessments are conducted by a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in assessments of various disorders.
At this time, graduate student trainees are not available to conduct assessments for children nor are they able to assess adults for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Scheduling an Assessment:
To schedule an assessment, contact us by phone or email with your name, contact information and brief description of your reason for seeking an assessment. A member of our staff will discuss your concerns in more detail, explain assessment procedures and answer your questions, and schedule an intake appointment. Once you have scheduled an appointment, we will send you an e-mail confirmation that includes information about the evaluation and payment options, directions to our clinic, and paperwork for you to review and complete prior to your appointment.
Assessment Procedures:
Assessments procedures are tailored to individual needs, but a typical evaluation involves 3 to 4 appointments across several weeks, including:
- 3-hour intake (clinic paperwork, diagnostic interview, questionnaires)
- 3-hour testing session (questionnaires and interactive tests)
- Additional testing (as needed, depending on reason for evaluation)
- A 60-minute feedback session to discuss results, diagnoses and recommendations
After the Assessment:
Within four weeks following the feedback session, you will be provided with a comprehensive written report detailing the assessment results, impressions and recommendations.
If you have questions about the specific assessment services we offer, please Contact Us or call (801) 581-4697 (Monday-Friday 9am to 3pm).
